"For gallant conduct on the 22nd September, 1917 in charge of a convoy conveying ammunition from 'S' Dump to BELLEWAARDE RIDGE through an enemy barrage placed across the road and continuing to carry out this duty until the destruction of the road by shell fire rendered it impossible. The coolness and determination of the N.C.O. under fire has been remarkable."
