On 28 February 1916 his father enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.), and embarked for service abroad on 31 March 1916 [18]
Resided with his mother in Donnybrook, and was baptised there by Methodist Minister A. T. N. HOLLAND on 30 June 1916 [84]
His father served with the 28th Battalion of the A.I.F. and was Killed in Action in France on 10 June 1918 [30: item 1836668]
In 1937 and 1938 had a number of stints working as a Repairer with the Western Australian Government Railways (W.A.G.R.) [389]
As a casual employee of W.A.G.R. he briefly worked railway repairing in places including Cue, Latham and Pindar [389]
During February 1938 he was unemployed and was camping on the beach in Geraldton [86: 22-Feb-1938]
