Private and later Lance Corporal 1792 in the Australian Imperial Force's 16th Battalion during the First World War [30]
Killed in Action on 29 August 1915 on the Gallipoli Peninsula in Turkey and was buried at the Embarkation Pier Cemetery [30]
His effects of a silver watch, photos, note books, post cards, letter, and rifle shots register were sent to his brother in Arrino [30]
Letter of Administration for his estate, valued at £9/18/9, were granted to his brother Michael in early October 1916 [39: 6-Oct-1916]
Received the 1914-15 Star, British War Medal, and Victory Medal which were also sent to his brother, as was his Memorial Scroll [30]

From The West Australian newspaper, Wednesday 29 September 1915:
Western Australian Casualties
"Mr M. J. Carroll, of Arrino, has received news of the death of his brother, Lance Corporal Joseph John Carroll, 4th reinforcements, 16th Battalion, who was killed in action at the Dardanelles on August 29. The late soldier left Western Australia as a private, and was promoted to the rank of lance-corporal while in the field. He was well-known in Dongarra and Sandstone, and for a considerable time was connected with the Sandstone Rifle Club. Another brother, Private Thos. Geo. Carroll, of the 11th Battalion, has been reported missing."
