From The Irwin Index newspaper, Saturday 11 February 1939:
Late Dr Hungerford - Long Association with Geraldton - Former Resident Medical Officer
"It was with very great regret that residents of Geraldton and the district heard of the death of Dr L. M .T. Hungerford, which occurred on Thursday of last week at St John of God Hospital, Subiaco. Dr Hungerford, who was 74 years of age, had been in failing health for some time past, and his death occurred after a long illness. He was a native of Cork, Ireland, and after taking his medical degree at Dublin, he came out to Western Australia. For two years he was district medical officer at Dongara, and was then transferred to Busselton, where, in addition to being resident medical officer, he was also the resident magistrate. In 1898 he was appointed district medical officer at Perth and also acted as medical officer for the municipality. The following year he resigned those positions to become district medical officer and quarantine officer at Geraldton. He had the sole control of the Victoria District Hospital under the old regime, and his association with Geraldton continued for many years. He was held in the highest esteem, and was well liked. He took a great interest in the affairs of the district and in 1912 he was elected unopposed as Mayor, but resigned the position in the following July. At one time he was interested in a farming property in the Upper Chapman district where he had a citrus orchard. When he severed his connection with Geraldton several years ago he was for a time resident in the North Midlands and in the Moora districts. Later he held the position of resident medical officer at Esperance, but retired about a year ago. The funeral took place in the Church of England Cemetery at Karrakatta on Friday afternoon of last week."
