From South Australia's The Southern Argus newspaper, Thursday 14 November 1929:
Locals
"The death took place last Friday of Mr Walter J. Rankin, eldest son of the late Mr and Mrs M. B. Rankin, Dry Plains, Strathalbyn, one of the earliest settler families of the district. Mr Walter Rankin had been in delicate health for some time past, and a severe attack of pneumonia recently weakened him so very much that he gradually succumbed to the resultant heart weakness and passed away as mentioned, at the age of 60 years. The funeral took place at the Strathalbyn cemetery, a big following of relatives and friends attending the last rites. Mr Rankin was very highly esteemed by all who knew him, and his death will be deeply regretted in a large circle."
