From The North Midland Times newspaper, Friday 14 August 1936:
Suicide and Cremation - Charred Remains of Farmer - Found in Smouldering Ashes
"Charred remains, believed to be those of R. J. Fennell, farmer of Perenjori, were extracted from a smouldering heap of ashes in a paddock, one mile from his homestead, by Constables Anderson and Bayliss on Thursday morning, July 30. The barrel of a 22 gauge rifle was found near the ashes. On Tuesday, July 28, Mr. White, Manager, Agricultural Bank, Perenjori, received word from Fennell, that someone should be sent out to his farm to look after the stock and machinery. On investigations Fennell could not be found and a search party was attended with unsuccessful results on Wednesday. On July 30 Constables Anderson and Bayliss picked up Fennell's tracks at his letter box on the Rothsay Road, following these to the middle of the paddock they were confronted with a smouldering heap of ashes and stumps. From these were extracted charred human bones, believed to be the remains of Fennell. On Saturday, July 25, at the Perenjori Police Court, R. J. Fennell pleaded guilty to a charge of having threatened E. R. Anderson, farmer of Perenjori. Fennell was bound over to be of good behaviour for six months on a personal bond of £50. An inquest was held at Perenjori on Monday last by Mr R. F. Fullerton, J.P., Acting Coroner, on the death of Raymond Joseph Fennell. After hearing evidence a verdict was returned that death was caused by a gunshot wound and burning, self-inflicted, and that there was no direct evidence to show the state of deceased's mind at the time of death. Fennell's remains were interred in the Perenjori cemetery on August 3."
